Clionadh Engrave & Ray Multichrome Eyeshadows Reviews & Swatches

Engrave

Clionadh Engrave Glitter Multichrome Eyeshadow ($7.50 for 0.05 oz.) is a muted, medium-dark pink with subtle, warm undertones and a mix of pink and copper flecks of shimmer/micro-sparkle along with a shift that from brighter, cooler pink to warmer pink to golden copper paired with a sparkling, metallic finish. Per the brand, it had a “semi-sheer brown base with large glitter particles that shift from lilac-pink-orange-gold.” The shift was visible in person but more subtle-to-moderate in effect.

The texture was soft, more loosely-pressed in the pan, so you’ll want to use a lighter hand, which the brand did advise to do, and press and pat the product on to avoid light fallout when working with a dry brush, though a fingertip or a dampened brush, which were how these were intended to be applied, yielded opaque, even results without fallout. It had mostly opaque coverage (in the form of shimmer), while the base itself seemed semi-sheer to medium in coverage–more noticeable if one sheered it out on purpose. It stayed on well for eight and a half hours on me with very faint fallout over time.

Formula Overview

$7.50/0.05 oz. - $150.00 Per Ounce

The formula is supposed to "apply relatively easy to the lid when patted on with a finger," but for "maximum longevity and intensity, apply over a set primer" or a "tacky base" for "larger-particle glitters." The brand goes on to stay that this formula can be applied with "your finger or a shader brush sprayed with setting spray" and then patted onto the lid. They also warn not to "dig" one's brush as they are "more delicate" in texture.

The base pigmentation varied from shade to shade, and the brand uses different particle sizes throughout the range, so some are finer and more pigmented and others may be more sparkly with a sheerer base. Keep in mind, the base being sheerer doesn't equate to a sheerer end product; the actual eyeshadows often appeared mostly opaque to opaque due to how packed they are with shimmer/sparkle--but it depended on the angle.

They end up being a bit more like traditional eyeshadow, since the bases have various colors (not black or transparent) with multichromatic shifts that varied from more intense to subtler. I felt like they were "easier" to use than the Jewelled Multichromes, especially if you're someone who uses more than a few shades at a time, though they have less of a high-shine finish and more of a twinkling/sparkling finish.

The texture was more loosely-pressed--definitely "delicate" as indicated by the brand--and worked best by patting or pressing onto the lid with a fingertip or a wet brush. They're still quite usable with a dry brush but definitely use a denser brush and a gentle pressing motion to pick up product. The texture itself was very soft, almost silky, and finely-milled; for has twinkling as the finish was, Clionadh's idea of "glitter" is more like fine sparkle.

The big difference with this formula is that the sheerer base makes them easier to sheer out for an all-over wash of color on the lid or diffused on the brow bone, but they can also be pressed into place without heavy blending for an intense, spotlight effect.

While setting spray or glitter glue would help to maximize longevity (by minimizing fallout over time), there was only light some fallout over time when pressed onto the lid with a fingertip and slight fallout applied with a dampened brush (wet with water) over eight to nine hours. The sparkles were finer and had better adhesion to bare skin, so the formula didn't need the most intense solution to minimize fallout in my experience.

Ray

Clionadh Ray Iridescent Multichrome Eyeshadow (Series 2) ($14.25 for 0.05 oz.) has more of a transparent base with an incredibly intense shift from lighter, golden peach to warmer pink to pink-coral paired with a twinkling, almost metallic sheen. Per the brand, it has a “nearly invisible base with colour shifting reflects that go from pink-red-orange-gold-lime.” The “lime” was the hardest part of the shift to really detect myself, but the others came through very, very readily.

It had a transparent base as described, the color shifting pearl/shimmer delivered semi-opaque, buildable coverage (opaque if applied damp), though it could be sheered out if desired. The texture was smooth, lightly creamy, and more loosely-pressed in the pan but not to the point where it seemed prone to excess product kicked up (just use a light to moderate hand when picking up product). It wore well for nine hours before fading visibly.

Formula Overview

$14.25/0.05 oz. - $285.00 Per Ounce

For those who find more popular Multichrome formulas (often the ones with black bases) harder to incorporate into looks, the Iridescents are some of the more versatile Multichromes I've come across that offer intense, shifting effects whether they're used alone, sheered out, over an eyeliner, or patted over one's favorite eyeshadow. They are also a bit smoother and firmly-pressed into the pan with a, generally, finer shimmer/sparkle to them, so they are less fragile and prone to fallout.

They work well with dry brushes, whether firmer or fluffier, along with fingertips and dampened brushes. The latter two methods yield more intense and metallic finishes and slightly more even application from the get-go. The majority of the shades had semi-opaque to opaque color coverage--more from the shimmer/shift as the bases are designed to be transparent--that blended out easily and stayed on well for eight to nine hours before fading.
